Bashful Banana Bakery & Cafe Review, Ocean City, NJ

As the quintessential Jersey-girl-at-heart (“You talkin’ to me?!”), I cannot let a trip back to Jersey pass without hitting up the Jersey Shore (and no, not the one from the show). My favorite Jersey beach is Ocean City. I’ve spent countless hours walking the boardwalk, vacationing, and even working there through the years. It is my to-go-to beach, hands down.

Several years ago, Bashful Banana Bakery & Cafe opened up on the boardwalk. When you are slammed with unhealthy goodness everywhere else on the boardwalk, Bashful Banana is like a light shining through the darkness. They are not a completely veg-restaurant, but are very vegan-friendly. They make vegan (and gluten-free) baked goods such as donuts (or “duffins” as they refer to them), muffins, and cookies. They also have an awesome veggie burger and numerous other breakfast, lunch, and dinner items that can be veganized.

Their main claim to fame however, has to be the banana whip. And yes, it is ONLY a banana. They push frozen bananas through a Champion juicer to get a custard-style banana dream dessert! You can get all kinds of yummy toppings on it to boot, such as fresh fruit, nuts, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, etc.

Most recently, I ordered one of my favorites, the Kiddie Peanut Butter Cup (peanut butter chips & all fruit fudge sauce) with sliced almonds. This is pure flavor punch in your mouth! At the bottom of the cup is the all fruit fudge sauce and peanut butter cups, then the layer of banana whip, and then topped with more all fruit fudge sauce, peanut butter chips, and almonds.
If you are ever in the Ocean City area, I highly recommend Bashful Banana, especially the banana whips. They are so choice!

Edited to add: I found out long after I originally posted this that the peanut butter chips (as least the ones when I checked in 2012) were not vegan. The whips are still great though, just choose other toppings for a delicious treat.

On the veganlicious scale, they are most definitely 5 out of 5 carrots.
