Merge Review – Buffalo, NY

Tuxedo Cat Desserts, Dinner, Restaurant Reviews Buffalo, chocolate mousse, dessert, dinner, Merge, New York, Niagara Falls, pizza, restaurant, seitan, wine

We recently went to Niagara Falls for our 1 year wedding anniversary. On the way, we stopped in Buffalo, NY to eat at Merge. Merge is a very vegan-friendly restaurant that I had heard good things about. Making a decision on what to eat was difficult. I ordered the following: Fuji Apple white wine (from Niagara, NY,) Seitan Hot Wings, Vegan Pizza, and vegan Amaretto Chocolate Mousse for dessert.

Truly the beginning and ending were the best of the meal. The Fuji Apple white wine was delicious! It was crisp, sweet, and reminded me of a lighter hard cider (which I’m notorious for ordering). The vegan Amaretto Chocolate Mousse was creamy, chocolate-y, and amazing!

I was less impressed with the Seitan Wings. When they came out, I thought (and rather hoped) they were tofu cubes. They were made of densely packed wheat gluten and didn’t quite have the texture I was expecting or hoping for. The hot sauce it was sauteed in was very good though.

I was warned in advance by our waiter that the Vegan Pizza (topped with broccoli, red onion, tomato, & a basil cashew cheese) was made on gluten-free dough. I took the chance to order it anyway. It looked delicious but was disappointingly bland. The cashew cheese was what sold me on ordering it, but it lacked the flavor and punch I wanted. I feel if there was a red sauce underneath, I would have enjoyed the pizza more. It had me re-thinking my order and wishing I had gotten the raw pizza instead. Oh well.

This place certainly is no Horizons (our favorite upscale vegan restaurant in Philadelphia that recently closed down), but it’s refreshing to see so many options in one place. The ambiance, decor, and musician playing a cover of Mazzy Star’s Fade Into You made it a classy place to eat. I’d give it another go around, but would definitely order different main dishes the next time.

I give it 3 out of 5 carrots on my veganlicious meter!

Chocolate Red Wine Cupcakes with Red Wine Glaze

Tuxedo Cat Desserts chocolate, cupcakes, dessert, Kelly Peloza, red wine

Yet, another amazing recipe I just tested for Kelly Peloza’s new cookbook! As a fan of wine, I could not pass this one up. If you love a distinct, complex, rich tasting dessert — this is the one for you! The red wine glaze drizzled on top of the frosting really seals the deal on this one.  I’m inspired to make my own wine-y desserts now.  Thanks Kelly!

I give these cupcakes a 4 1/2 out of 5 carrots on my veganlicious scale.

Peanut Butter Cup Banana Smoothie Muffins

Tuxedo Cat Desserts banana, chocolate chips, dessert, Kelly Peloza, muffins, peanut butter

I recently tested a new recipe for Kelly Peloza’s upcoming cookbook (which is centered around drink-inspired foods!) for Peanut Butter Cup Banana Smoothie Muffins. Let me just say that these things barely made it out of my kitchen for my hubby to bring to work! The kitchen filled with the aroma somewhere between banana bread heaven and a peanut brittle candy making factory! I could have eaten the whole batch, but figured I should stop after one or two. Divine! You can get a sneak peek at the recipe at Kelly’s blog, Seitan Beats Your Meat.

I give this recipe 5 out of 5 carrots on my veganlicious meter!

Welcome to the Tuxedo Cat!

Tuxedo Cat Uncategorized animal rights, blog, food, Kelly Peloza, The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur, vegan, welcome

I’ve been Facebooking, tweeting, and generally sharing my love for vegan food and animal rights for awhile now. People are always asking more details about the food I make or how to become vegetarian or vegan. My hope one day is to open a vegan bed and breakfast. I’ve been honing my vegan baking and cooking skills for several years. I have been wanting to start a blog for awhile, but have been too busy/lazy/forgetful to do so. It wasn’t until I very recently became a tester for a new vegan cookbook by Kelly Peloza, author of The Vegan Cookie Connoisseur that I figured I should get my act together!

So welcome to my blog! I hope this helps you on your journey to fabulous vegan cooking and general awareness for the other sentient beings of this planet.
